Varicose Veins
What are Varicose Veins?
High blood pressure and poorly functioning venous valves causes increased pressure in the veins, resulting
in varicose veins. Factors that can increase your risk for varicose veins include a family history of varicose
veins, being overweight, not exercising enough, smoking, and standing or sitting for long periods of time. Women
are more likely than men to develop varicose veins. Varicose veins usually affect people between the ages of 30
and 70.
What are the options for treating varicose veins?
- Medical therapy, including elastic stockings, elevation and analgesics like ibuprofen
- Ablation of the treated vein, or removal through surgery
- Laser or vein stripping
What type of treatment is best for me?
Your doctor will discuss your symptoms, the appearance of your veins and skin, and all potential treatment
