Juddson Rupp, 38
"A little over three years ago I suffered a cardiac arrest while exercising at the YMCA. My heart went into Ventricular Fibrillation and had stopped beating. I had an existing heart condition called "Athlete's Heart"-technically hypertropic cardiomyopathy, or enlarged heart. My heart had grown to become a little larger than normal due to much exercise and years of playing football. However, I had not been on any medication. You can say that I was very lucky, but it was much more than luck. It's a miracle that I survived. I was resuscitated by a Good Samaritan. ..." more...

Overview

The Sanger Clinic believes that support groups play an important role in patient recovery. The opportunity to communicate and connect with other people with similar experiences provides not only information, but also a sense of hope, a forum to 'vent,' and the chance to feel that you are not alone. Support groups also provide an opportunity to help others and share their experiences.

The Sanger Clinic is proud to sponsor two support groups for our patients:

Levine Cardiac Kids is a group that supports children who are being treated for, or have recently been diagnosed with, Congenital Heart Defects (CHD) and their families. Click here to learn more about this program.

The ICD (Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator) Support Group is a support group for ICD recipients, their families and friends in the greater Charlotte area. Sponsored by The Sanger Clinic, The Carolinas Heart Institute and the major ICD device manufacturers, the ICD Support Group offers a forum for education and a network for support. The Heart of a Woman Support Group is a joint effort between the Sanger Clinic and Carolinas Healthcare System. Our goal is to unite women who have survived a cardiac event with women striving to prevent similar experiences. Through education, sharing of information and encouragement, all participants are empowered with the knowledge required to begin or maintain a heart healthy lifestyle. Click here for further information.

Sister to Sister National Woman's Heart Day is a free event where women can obtain heart health screenings, advice on reducing their personal risks for heart disease, and guidance on adopting heart healthy lifestyles. Heart screenings measure a woman's total and HDL cholesterol, blood pressure, blood glucose, body mass index, and provide an overall risk assessment. Results are given on-site and include medical counseling. Health fair participants also attend fitness, beauty and cooking demonstration and receive giveaways. Seminars are given by nationally known experts on nutrition, obesity, fitness, quitting smoking and stress management, all key to heart disease prevention. Click here for further information.
