Dr. Riopel specializes in pediatric cardiology with interest in preventive cardiology and adult congenital cardiology. Dr. Riopel has been with the Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute for over 23 years. He came to Sanger from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, where he was professor of pediatric cardiology. In Charleston, aside from clinical duties, Dr. Riopel developed an interest in pediatric blood pressure and served on the National Task Force for Pediatric Blood Pressure which published normal blood pressure values for children of different ages. Later he developed an interest in exercise testing of children and published normal blood pressure and heart rate responses of children exercising on the treadmill.

After coming to Charlotte, Dr. Riopel was eventually joined by five other pediatric cardiologists sub-specializing in interventions, electrophysiology and imaging techniques. He started an adult congenital heart clinic and a pediatric lipid clinic. Dr. Riopel and his colleagues have been responsible for the growth of pediatric cardiology and congenital cardiovascular surgery in the Charlotte region.
