On July 1, 2009, Carolinas HealthCare System organized a new business unit, Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute (SHVI) by combining the practices of Carolinas Heart & Vascular Institute at Carolinas Medical Center, Charlotte Cardiology Associates and the Sanger Clinic.

Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute includes an impressive staff of adult and pediatric cardiologists, and cardiac, thoracic and vascular surgeons. With numerous locations in both North and South Carolina, Sanger offers convenient access to heart care no matter where you live, work or play.

By offering total cardiac care, including preventive, diagnostic and full-range treatment of cardiovascular disease for pediatric and adult patients, Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute is positioned to provide a level of care unmatched in the region. Our innovations and list of firsts include the region's only heart transplant program, pediatric heart specialists, congenital surgery, clinical research, a cardiac teaching program, nationally-renowned specialists and much more.

Sanger Heart and Vascular Institute is part of Carolinas HealthCare System, one of the leading healthcare systems in the Southeast, with 25 affiliated hospitals in North and South Carolina.

Carolinas HealthCare System employs more than 1,300 physicians, and serves patients in more than 450 care locations including physician practices, nursing homes, surgical and rehabilitation centers, home health agencies and other facilities. These operations comprise some 5,400 licensed beds and employ more than 40,000 employees.

Carolinas HealthCare System’s flagship facility is Carolinas Medical Center, an 874-bed hospital in Charlotte that includes a Level I trauma center, a research institute and numerous specialty units (heart, cancer, organ transplant, behavioral health, etc.). Carolinas Medical Center also serves as one of North Carolina’s five Academic Medical Center Teaching Hospitals, providing residency training for more than 240 physicians in 15 specialties.
